Delhi Assembly Session Proceeds Amidst Drama: Chief Minister Kejriwal Absent Due to ED Arrest

The session, originally scheduled for Friday, was rescheduled following Kejriwal's arrest, plunging the capital into a whirlwind of legal and political turmoil.

Kejriwal, a prominent figure in Indian politics, has been detained by the ED since 21st March in connection to a case linked to the now-defunct excise policy. His absence from the assembly session marks a stark departure from the norm, leaving citizens and political observers alike stunned and questioning the implications of his detainment on the state's governance.

The drama intensifies as the Delhi High Court prepares to hear Kejriwal's petition challenging his arrest on Wednesday. The bench, led by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, is poised to delve into the intricacies of the case, with Kejriwal's legal team vehemently arguing that both the arrest and subsequent remand order are illegal. Their contention rests on the assertion that Kejriwal is entitled to immediate release from custody.

The saga began unfolding on 22nd March when a trial court remanded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader to ED custody until 28th March. The ED has alleged that Kejriwal is a major beneficiary of illicit gains stemming from an alleged liquor scam, with his name recurrently surfacing in charge sheets filed by the agency. According to the ED, Kejriwal had close ties to individuals involved in formulating the contentious excise policy, which allegedly led to undue advantages for them in exchange for kickbacks to the AAP.

While initially not named in the FIRs registered by the ED or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning the Delhi excise policy case, Kejriwal's name prominently featured in the ED's subsequent chargesheet. The agency claimed that he engaged in a video call with Sameer Mahendru, a key accused, urging him to collaborate with co-accused Vijay Nair, the AAP's communications-in-charge at the time.

Nair, one of the initial arrests made by the CBI in 2022, set off a chain reaction culminating in the apprehension of former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in connection to the same case.

As the legal battle ensues and the political landscape simmers with tension, Delhi finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with the fallout of its leader's arrest and the implications it holds for governance and accountability.
